The students that we reach are considered Newcomers. They have recently arrived in the United States, some coming into my classroom only having been in this country for one week. Most of our students are Spanish speakers and have small amounts of exposure to English. Our goal is to prepare students for the United States education system and to do that we give them many different resources to help them on this journey. One is a personal English-Spanish dictionary that allows them to access and understand the many English words that they come across in their learning. Currently, we are seeing an uptake in the enrollment of new students, and our current dictionary supply is not enough. I have requested 50 English-Spanish dictionaries. These dictionaries will empower our students to become independent learners while also improving their English understanding. Due to state testing, our students need to learn to use a dictionary since they are only allowed a bilingual dictionary to complete their tests. Also, it is just a good skill to know. We practice looking up words in the dictionary class every day and students are becoming faster and more efficient at doing this. I want every student to be able to have their own dictionary so they can all be given the same opportunity to learn. We greatly appreciate your support as we work to empower our students.
