I teach in a special education classroom and my students often struggle with comprehension. I do my best to differentiate and read at the students’ pace. In doing so we often read the entirety of our novels in class. Usually I read aloud, but at times this does not meet the needs of all students. Some students need to go back and have sections reread, some need to move quicker, and some need extended time to discuss events. As I am just one person, I cannot give each individual student the support that they need when it comes to the physical act of reading. In turn, students become frustrated and less interested in the task. To better engage students, it would be best for them to have access to a recorded version of the novel that they can follow along with at their own pace. They can pause, rewind, and re-listen again at home if necessary. Given this opportunity for differentiation, I believe that there will be more buy in from students.
