Having a flexible learning environment for my students will allow them to have a sense of ownership in their learning and in their classroom. The different seating areas without tables will allow students to move, sit and lay how they feel is most comfortable. I want my students to feel comfortable in the classroom physically and emotionally, and I believe flexible seating choices will allow students to feel physically comfortable. When I have allowed students to freely pick a spot in the classroom to work the engagement is instantly higher. My school district has adapted a play based emphasis in Kindergarten and having a flexible seating environment will only enhance my student's learning. I have carefully selected meaningful pieces of furniture for my students. Each area in the classroom with seating will be structured in pods which will tailor to collaboration and group work. The 'floor cushions' and the 'go anywhere chairs' are easy and light for students to pick up and move around the room to fit the student's liking. Student choice is a powerful and necessary thing in the classroom and with your help I believe a flexible seating environment will promote more student choice.
