This seating will help my students step out of the normal mainstream classroom and into an environment where they can control their learning. Flexible seating gives the student a more student-centered environment. Simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity in the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially. Providing students with a choice to express their specific wants and needs increases their time on task. Our students are not ordinary, so why give them ordinary seating? Many of the seating options listed on our wish list help support hyperactivity. Items such as the balance ball chair, inflatable disc seats, wobble cushions, and donut ball, give the student the opportunity to release extra energy while also staying on task with the teacher. Stretchy resistance bands have proven successful for increasing on-task behavior for students with ADHD, Autism, SPD or even poor concentration. With flexible seating, some students may choose to not sit at a table but rather on the floor. The sitting table would be perfect for students to have a solid place to work while also sitting in their desired location.
