Many of my students are refugees from other countries. They often come to us scared, bewildered and homesick. Our school is a high poverty, inner city school. It is also rich with culture and diversity. My students love it when I show the kids where their country is on the class globe. I use every opportunity to allow them to teach us something about their homelands, and to share traditions, language and cultural experiences. I believe that this helps them feel included, special and valued. I make every effort to teach peace. and tolerance on a daily basis.
