Poison on the Colony is a rich, engaging historical fiction novel that is the sequel to Blood on the River. I have already used Blood on the River to successfully teach previous classes reading comprehension (inferring, character development, cause & effect), U.S. History (Jamestown, encounters between cultures), and life lessons (choosing out of love instead of fear, finding mentors, tolerance and respect of other cultures, having grit to overcome obstacles). The students love Elisa Carbone's novel! Please allow us to continue the journey with the sequel, Poison on the Colony, so that my inquisitive students see how the journey of the Jamestown colony continues to unfold and how historical lessons from the past have life lessons for us today. In particular, the sequel introduces the critical historical concepts in the early colonies of apprenticeship, indentured servitude, slavery, the start of democratic governance in the colonies, and interactions between English colonists and Native Americans, all through historical characters that students can relate to.
