The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students are for a multi-sensory room to assist with social emotional learning. Social emotional learning is the process through which students understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Sensory rooms assist with social emotional learning by giving the students a place for calming, releasing energy, managing emotion, and much more. Many students at my school struggle with managing emotions and need a safe place to learn how to regulate their body safely. By implementing a multi-sensory room, my students would have such a space to help develop ways to stimulate their senses, improve balance, movement and spatial orientation, and dramatically reduce the need to "act up" in class. Many students do not know why they scream, throw items, or have behaviors in the classroom. Sensory environments can be highly effective in reducing classroom behaviors by providing a moment of comfort and calm for overactive and distressed individuals, and helping inactive individuals to feel better engaged. The best way to increase classroom engagement and reduce maladaptive behaviors is to prevent them from starting. I would love to give my students an opportunity to appropriately release energy by jumping on a trampoline or throwing a weighted ball verse running out of the room or throwing a chair.
