The use of ukuleles in my general music class will help students engage and want to learn how to read music notes, music terms, and connect to the music topics we discuss. Students love to learn about music when they are engaged in the creative process. It is hard for students to want to learn how to read music and get a basic understanding when they do not experience it for themselves. Ukuleles are a perfect way to introduce the general music education students to the world of music. These students are typically the students who were too nervous to sign-up for a regular performing arts class. I have seen countless kids come alive when learning the ukulele as it is a fun and non-threatening way to start the music learning process. I foresee many of these kids going on and playing other instruments and joining other extra-curriculum activities that will enrich their educational experience.
