At our school, students use the Maker Space to create, invent, and innovate. This is a student-centered space, used by hundreds of students each week. In this extraordinary space, students feel free to create, explore, make mistakes, and most importantly, collaborate and support one another. Students love working in the Maker Space! It's a special place on campus where they can work without boundaries. Students can pursue their own interests within the STEAM subjects, whether it be coding, sewing, art, engineering, using microscopes, designing, tinkering, shooting movies, or learning how to create their own website. The Maker Space is designed to support a variety of student interests. Our goal is to give students many options and experiences so that they can find the areas they are most passionate about. This goal requires a wide selection of materials and tools for students to use and explore with. The light boxes are effective in allowing young artists to practice art techniques like perspective, patterns, and negative space by replicating images. They are also versatile tools as they can be used for embroidery, quilting, and cut-outs. These multiple-use pieces of equipment are exactly what students need to explore different art forms. The students love building and exploring with legos and robots. The Lego Boost integrate legos and technology, which will allow students to practice engineering and using technology at the same time. This will be a great addition to the Maker Space because students will go through the entire building process, develop critical thinking skills, and understand the ins and outs of programming. Lastly, a renewable energy kit will be used by teachers as a supplemental tool when teaching about renewable energy and environmental stewardship. This is a critical piece of equipment, students need hands on materials to understand new and unfamiliar concepts.
