When I think about my time as a student, I can still remember being read to by my teachers and how much I enjoyed that time during the day. Now, thinking about the years as the teacher, one of my favorite parts of my day is the time I spend reading to my students. These books will be used as mentor texts and exemplars while implementing the Reader's and Writer's Workshop models. Through the workshop model the students see what it is like to become the author of works and to value themselves as writers as well as enjoy the print as readers. This quality literature is chosen specific for our standards. They will be used during mini lessons and for us to refer back to throughout the school year as guides when we are working. We will be able to immerse ourselves in both fiction and nonfiction and long and short texts. These texts will provide my students with a basis for rich discussions and help foster hands on learning when working on our reading and writing standards. Since reading and writing go hand in hand, we will be able to use this quality literature in both the Writer's and Reader's Workshop models. Fostering a love of reading and writing early in a student's academic career is so important. These books will help me keep my students engaged in reading and writing and continue to foster a love for the craft!
