As a teacher who works with emergent bilinguals from many cultural backgrounds, I have seen how a lack of representation of cultures and languages can impact students. Our kids need books that make them feel at home, that represent their cultures and languages. Their stories matter- and our classroom and school libraries need to reflect that. My goal is to continue building a diverse picture book library, for my students to read and to share with other teachers. By building up a library of diverse literature, especially picture books, teachers can use these stories as read alouds in all classrooms to build racial and cultural inclusivity in the classroom. My students will also have direct access to these books, to enjoy for their own free-reading time.
