Flexible seating is the idea that students may sit in places other than their seat for independent work. Giving students comfortable floor seats and stools instead of chairs not only makes our classroom inviting, but encourages daily attendance, a sense of belonging and a positive attitude toward learning. Students enjoy the novelty of flexible seating while appreciating their efforts to earn the opportunity to choose flexible seating when they demonstrate good behavior during other learning times. As a teacher, I have personally seen students’ attitudes toward participation in class activities change when they realize they can sit wherever they want to read silently, work on an assignment or complete writing projects. Who wouldn’t want to be comfortable? Help make our classroom an engaging and inviting place to learn!
