Research has proven that flexible seating increases student engagement and collaboration, allowing students to take a sense of ownership in their leaning environment. Based on this research, I added some forms of flexible seating into my classroom this past year. Students were assigned a "free spot" in which they could chose to work (with a clipboard and pillow) instead of their traditional table/chair. I loved the collaboration and excitement that this provided for my students, but I did not have the resources to purchase flexible seating options. Based on my research and actual observation in my classroom over the past year, I am confident that my first grade students will love and benefit from using flexible seating options. Specifically, wobble chairs are ideal for students who are hyperactive, as they can wiggle nonstop and yet keep from falling over because of the rounded base; balance disks will enable students who enjoy working on the floor with lap desks to comfortably write and collaborate; the chair ball (with feet) helps students focus while promoting muscle development; and students kick their legs repeatedly when using busy bands, increasing oxygen and blood flow to the brain.
