A few years ago, our school became involved in a great program called "Project Lead the Way." This initiative is designed to encourage students to pursue a high school science pathway focusing on Engineering. The program starts in freshman year and carries all the way through with the same group of students to senior year. Classes are given the opportunity to pursue student-led, project-based learning opportunities encompassing all realms of science. The freshman year Project Lead the Way course is called “Introduction to Engineering Design.” In this class, students learn about the engineering design process, practice sketching and dimensioning techniques, participate in engineering design challenges, and create 3D imaging files using Autodesk Inventor software. The major project in the first half of the year has students design, sketch, and model their own puzzle cube in Autodesk Inventor. Currently, the students build their puzzle cubes out of wooden blocks, but they would love to see their Inventor files printed into actual 3D models. Our students work with software all year to envision three dimensional projects and would be so excited to have the opportunity to hold these projects in their hands!
