Many of my ESOL Newcomers come with gaps in their education and sometimes a lack of first language literacy skills. Therefore teaching reading is the most important skill for students to learn while they are in my classroom. However, students also need to acquire foundational skills in the areas of math, science, and social studies as well. Finding materials that are age-appropriate, high-interest and accessible across the content areas is extremely difficult. The selected picture books were carefully selected to be used at the secondary level and will help develop English proficiency, literacy skills, and academic content knowledge. The language in these books are accessible, the illustrations are attractive and informative without being childish, and the material is interesting and instructional.
