My students are creative and kind and are always looking to learn in innovative ways. We spend 9 weeks studying poetry and classic poetry can be pretty difficult to understand. The book The Crossover by Kwame Alexander is a book of poems that tell a story of modern kids. This heart-warming book is told from the point of view from an African American boy in a modern day high school that plays basketball with his twin brother. He makes pop culture references that the students can relate to, which has the students begging to read more. The boys face challenges that every day students may be experiencing, which makes an excellent extension to our poetry curriculum. This book is an excellent resource to teach student's poetry with a text that they will understand and relate to. My classroom needs a class set so that we can study the elements of poetry through this book.
