These plastic letter tiles and word "parts" will help students internalize the relationship between letter sounds and spelling and make connection between similar words in the English language. Since my students are learning English as a second (or third!) language, they need more practice than other fifth graders making these connections as they learn to read. These phonics materials will help students make connections from known words faster, which will increase their reading fluency. For example, students will use the materials to create new words from a base word. From the root word "place," students can use the "word part tiles" to easily create the words: replace, (re)places, (re)placed, and (re)placement. Imagine how this simple activity multiplies the number of words a student can now read fluently! I will also use the word tiles to show students how exchanging the initial or final letter(s) of one word can create a new word. Students can explore creating similarly spelled words: ie: beak, bead, beam, etc- and research shows that exploration such as this strongly supports growth in reading fluency. Thank you for your support in this project!
