I teach amazing students who are interested in learning about Mathematics and how to apply this knowledge in real life applications. In 7th and 8th grade we use calculators for numerous aspects of our curriculum that allow students to correctly solve the problem but more importantly they can spend more time on breaking the problem apart, understanding how the problem works and why the problem works the way it does. We use a lot of self-discovery labs in our class so students work in groups to problem solve. When students need to see or understand the bigger picture, it is important they can utilize a calculator to correctly apply that number sense quickly so they can work on the problem as a whole, rather than being stuck just on calculating. Scientific calculators also have many different higher-level options so students can learn different functions of a calculator and how we can apply them to our problems.
