The supplies I need for my classroom aren't fancy or glamorous, but they ARE essential to helping my classroom be as productive as possible. My class follows a Verbal Behavior model of teaching, and a key element to this type of teaching is fast-paced instruction, and using every teachable moment to its fullest potential. In order to achieve this and ensure that you don't let any learning opportunity slip away, having all supplies readily available and organized is vital. The benefit to my students of using this fast-paced, very systematic and organized type of teaching is that it ensures that the students stay engaged, motivated, and focused on their learning. In this way, we are packing in a huge number of learning opportunities, often in a brief period of time, allowing students to maximize their time focusing on their specific targets. Having students' educational materials easily accessible is the only way to achieve this. Materials that provide them with the sensory input they need to feel calm, comfortable and balanced will also help reduce distractions and allow them to be more active learners. Additionally, although I do not want to provide my students with an environment that will overstimulate their senses, I do want to make sure that each day when they walk into their classroom they are met with a cheerful, comfortable vibe that makes them smile!
