I teach 5th grade classes within a county that struggles economically and academically. Many of the students do not have the opportunities to travel and experience various types of hands-on field trips that other districts are able to provide their students. Many come from single parent families that are struggling with unemployment issues. I try to provide them as many science experiments that could possibly be replicated at home to make the subject of science come alive. They are eager to learn as teachers are faced with the task of preparing our learners for the 21st century. The reality of it all is that students must face the cold facts that alternative energy sources are now eupon us. They must understand the concepts behind them as they may possibly have to make a choice one day on what would best accommodate their needs as adults. After building the boats, I would like to take the students out so that they can race their boats at athe nearby lake.
