My students currently use sign language or a binder with picture cards to communicate. Access to an iPad Pro with a Communication app will provide them an unlimited vocabulary to work with. We will start with core words, the most used words in the English language. With just these core words the students can create meaningful sentences like “I want to go play” or “I don’t like to wait.” Having the words to express their thoughts and feelings will help the students be more successful not just in school, but in life. Currently, these students are in a special school because their behavior cannot be managed in a traditional school setting. With functional communication skills, they will no longer need to act out their frustrations.
