After quite a bit of research I have decided to convert my classroom to a flexible seating model. I will eliminate the majority of single desks and replace them with low tables, bean bag chairs, stools, and other options. We will come together on the floor as a whole class for direct instruction and group discussions. While students are working independently or collaborating (whether it be with the teacher or peers) they will have a variety of seats to choose from. Flexible seating allows children to work in an environment that is more comfortable, encouraging collaboration and more meaningful learning. Students will have more control in the classroom. They will take ownership of their learning and discover which style works best for them.
