Have you ever sat in one place so long that you felt that you became part of the chair? That is how many of my students feel after sitting in the hard, blue plastic chairs provided by the district. Yes, we are grateful for having a wonderful place to learn, as well as desks and chairs, but sometimes students cannot stay focused because they become so uncomfortable. My students can be very fidgety and when they are uncomfortable they may cause disruptions and complain out loud. Stand up desks will allow students to move out of their seats and go to a place where they can stretch and still learn. Sometimes students become so uncomfortable sitting in the same position that they stop learning and then become a distraction to others. I have also found that it is more difficult for them to fall asleep while standing and some of the students simply prefer standing. I currently only have one station that allows this opportunity, even though I have been asking for these accommodations for the last 4 years.
