Second graders are busy little people. They simply can not sit for hours at a time in the same spot. They need movement to help grow their brain while at the same time learning the skills they will need for life. A reaseacher, Dieter Breithecker says “static-passive sitting and a lack of physical activity during lessons leaves the neuromuscular system unchallenged and leads to degeneration.” Breithecker also goes on to state that, “[a] child’s healthy brain will signal its need for a dynamic load shifts unconsciously by rocking or fidgeting on conventional chairs,” and therefore recommends alternatives for seating and students being allowed to move about. I have noticed that when I started giving my students the option to move about the classroom, I saw them stay focused on their work longer and with more enthusiasm. There was also less falling out of their chairs due to rocking in them. Although this is not a picture of my actual classroom, it is my dream for my students in the coming school year. This project will enable me to get different seating options for my students. My students with ADHD will be able to fidget and bounce if needed while other students can choose to sit on the floor if that works better for them.
