Starting out I was very determined to have my students using the target language in every way possible, that being through speaking, writing, reading, music, videos, even communicating through charades at times. I was given a novel by a seasoned Spanish teacher, that my students were interested in and kept up with the story line. I have recently been reading about comprehensible input and want to start a classroom library full of novels that students will want to read. My kids loved the story, the historical viewpoint, and most of all, the fact that they could just read on their own! I find that often students are wary of reading in Spanish because they don't know what a word means. These books have translations on the side of the text and were written with the intent for a second language reader to understand just what was happening. The novels I have chosen have story lines that teenagers can relate to in their personal and daily life. I have also chosen books that are in English that were written by Spanish authors that exposes them to poems, history, and cultural differences and similarities in the lives of young people in Latin America and the U.S.
