Because of safety issues, students, on the whole, are not as connected to nature as their grandparents who were free to roam around unsupervised. Television and computer games have replaced grabbing a fishing pole or a blackberry picking bucket for a day of adventure outdoors. The outdoor classroom provides a safe and comfortable forest setting where students draw, nature journal, write, read, and take part in environmental education activities. I teach art in grades 1st - 5th and a fun activity we do each year is to go on a scavenger hunt and draw plants that the Native Americans and settlers used for medicinal purposes and food. Funding would add to our teaching collection of plants and entice even more animals onto our playground. It allows our school to teach math, art, and science in a real-world setting. DonorsChoose would allow students who want to rake to not have to share a single rake. The wrought iron fencing would keep plants off a sidewalk leading into one side of our building. Your kind consideration of helping us out is greatly appreciated.
