Every year I incorporate choice independent reading for my students. They get to choose a book that appeals to them and they read it outside of the class curriculum. The struggle has always been having enough books. I have built a fairly good classroom library through used bookstores, and between that and the school library, most of them can find something to read. I have always wanted to do literature circles where several students read a book and discuss and analyze it together. This is a great way to hone speaking and listening skills. It helps teach them to respect other people's opinions, and often opens their eyes to things they hadn't noticed. Getting several copies of several books is exactly what I need to do this. I have chosen books to appeal to a wide range of students in the hope that everyone can feel represented and become engaged.
