The two novels my students want to read this year are I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Diaz and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz. These two books have Hispanic protagonists, Hispanic authors and speak to our current generation. Because they are willing to read then they should have books that represent their culture, I have two sections of American Literature with 40 students in each and having 80 copies of each novel would make a huge difference in their reading life. I would be able to plan conversations across the class periods where they can discuss these two books. We would be delighted to start with this one title, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, and then maybe next year we can get the second title.
