Research shows that reading for pleasure is one of the best ways to build reading capacity, but a growing number of students do not read for pleasure (Clark and Rumbold, 2006). This is certainly true for students in my classroom. When I try to coax my students into reading, they complain that they do not like books, that books are boring, or that they see no connection to what they are reading. Classroom libraries play a key role in providing access to books and promoting literacy; they have the potential to increase student motivation, engagement, and achievement and help students become critical thinkers, analytical readers, and informed citizens (NCTE, 2017). As a new teacher, my classroom library is limited, yet a robust library is critical in supporting my students in constructing their reading lives. I want to fill my shelves with diverse texts that reflect the lives and experiences of my students. In light of my students' reading limitations, I need books they can access that will light their imaginations and delight their senses. Using recommendations from We Need Diverse books (https://diversebooks.org), I would like to stock my shelves with books to entice my readers. My vision is that everyday we will begin each class reading self-selected books, with time to share our discoveries with book talks, reflective writing, and book snaps. Access to quality books is the first step to creating that community of literacy.
