Flexible seating gives the students the ability to choose what type of seat they need for learning activities throughout our day. Depending on the learning task, my students may need movement, sensory input or comfort in order to successfully complete learning tasks and process information. If our classroom had options such as lap desks, Aloha Bean Bag Chairs, soft floor cushions and donut ball chairs to implement flexible seating my students will be able to customize their learning. They will also feel in charge of their learning, help them better understand in what space they focus on learning best and promote collaboration within our classroom.
There are numerous benefits to flexible seating. First, the students will be able to make choices for themselves as learners. This will help them feel empowered and in control of their environment. Secondly, this type of seating allows movement; which will help my students sustain focus on the more demanding learning tasks of 1st grade. Next, flexible seating options also can aide sensory input. This type of stimulation through the sense of touch can help students focus and process information. I feel one of the most important benefits of flexible seating is the sense of comfort it will provide.
As an adult, I know I process information and am more actively engaged when I am comfortable in the space in which I am learning. My students are no different in this need. Finally, this type of seating will encourage and promote more collaboration within our classroom because this seating can be moved anywhere in our classroom. My 1st graders would be easily able to work within many different peer groups or spaces within our classroom at any given time in our day. Flexible seating will bring so many benefits to my students!
