I teach in a Head Start Preschool classroom helping children and families get ready for kindergarten. "Play is often talked about as if it were relief from serious learning, But for children play is serious learning; Play really is the work of childhood." The toys and supplies I am requesting will help me create a science center, expand our art area, and make dramatic play more inviting. In the science center we want to do more hands on experiments using the droppers, magnets and magnifying glasses by exploring our environment and items that go along with each unit such as flowers or seashells. Our dramatic play area needs some people for the doll house and some dolls for the crib. Dramatic play is a great way for children to learn while playing, they will tend to the babies, play restaurant, vet and doctor. The art supplies we are asking for will give the children a great opportunity to express their creativity during small groups and free choice time. We work on developing our fine motor skills by playing with manipulative toys, which can also be used for matching pairs, creating a-b patterns and letter recognition. With having 2 classes a day, organization is key, some office supplies such as vinyl for our floors and shelf labels and velcro dots to display the children's art work would make our lives so much easier.
