Our desire is to create a more natural work environment that mimics real-world working situations. Just as adults get tired of sitting in one spot for an entire day, so do children. Studies show that allowing movement and student choice in seating helps many students stay engaged. As an inclusive classroom, many of our students have goals related to completing assignments and staying focused. During 90 minute periods, this can be challenging! Flexible seating is the solution to this problem! Flexible seating is proven to be beneficial to students. Flexible seating allows students to stay engaged by moving around the classroom and having comfortable seating choices. With flexible seating, students will also be able to work collaboratively more easily. We are looking to add low tables with pillows for floor seats, bouncy chairs for students who need movement to stay focused, and benches for students to sit comfortably during group work (as well as providing extra storage for student supplies). Listed below are some more benefits of flexible seating: -promotes student choice and responsibility -builds community as students take turns and share supplies -empowers learners and motivates them to work efficiently and effectively throughout the day -allows students to release excess energy while building core strength -provides opportunities to work cooperatively -creates an atmosphere for engaged learners as comfort creates a more relaxing and focused environment -stimulates students' sense of touch -motivates students to be responsible as they want to earn and keep their favorite spots As you can see, this project would impact the lives of many students for years to come and truly turn our classroom into a "Learner's Paradise!"
