To do this, I plan to use board games and STEM toys as instructional tools that will allow students to use a variety of social skills in a classroom setting. For example, while playing a board game or creating something with STEM toys, my students will learn how to interact with others, compromise, and work together. They will also practice using manners, having patience, taking turns, and demonstrating good sportsmanship. Giving students time to play and create will also give them a much needed break from their academic studies. Recent research shows that breaks are an essential part of learning because it is during this downtime that our brains are processing memories and experiences. Short breaks can also increase student productivity and attention, decrease stress, and reduce disruptive behavior. By setting aside a little time each day for students to play games and build with STEM toys, students will be having fun while also enhancing their social skills.
