My students are amazing, of course. I have children from more than eight countries, who speak many different languages at home. Our school is full of language learners and families eager to help their kids learn, but whose comfort in reading with their children is limited. My students are first graders. They are just beginning to decode, and as they make meanings of the new words they can read they are incredibly excited. During read aloud time my kids are rapt; when I say I'm going to read more than one book there is a murmur of excitement. And during their quiet reading time they always want to share the books they are reading with their friends. Because many of the students are limited in their ability with standard English and many do not come from families in which reading is a prized activity, I am excited that I can provide such an environment for them at school.
