My energetic second-grade students possess many different forms of intelligence; I seek to create a learning environment that strengthens each student’s ability to focus on learning, as well as capitalize on their learning aptitude. Some students learn by doing, others by hearing or seeing. They are all unique learners and I encourage them to take ownership of their learning. Unless we create an environment that enables students to focus on learning and capitalize on their individual learning strengths, they are not engaged and do not perform to their fullest potential. Educational research has proven that flexible seating increases student engagement, collaboration, and ownership of the learning environment. Wobble cushions allow for rocking, both at desks and on the floor. Floor seats allow students to stretch out and dive into a good book from the classroom library. As a teacher, I must be flexible and find how I can best support each student’s learning. Please help me create a learning environment that is welcoming, inspiring and channels the intelligence of each student.
