These items will be used in our Regulation Room, which is a brand new area at Virtus. The Regulation Room is an area to help children learn about emotions and how to manage them. It is also an safe haven to regroup so the students can be successful in the classroom without carrying emotional baggage with them. For example, they will be able to use the sensory items to relieve the stressors they may face throughout the day. They will also be able to read about emotions from the numerous books I have selected. We will be able to talk about how to deal with those emotions as well as play games to better understand emotions. For example, Feelings in a Jar is a game to help children understand and name their feelings. All 5 senses will be affected with the items I have selected. There will be a diffuser in the room with lemon and/or lavender, flexible seating, and mood lighting. There will also be sensory pathways throughout the room. Kids we able to relax and learn new coping skills like being creative with K'NEX and building blocks, watch bubbles float through the air from the AQCSS Bubble Machine, Many of our students experience stress before they even walk into our doors. It is even more important, now more so than ever, to have a place students can come to mentally and emotionally prepare to learn and grow. This room will make the biggest difference in our students' lives. They will be able to cope with the stressors of life better as well as be ready to work! The goal is by having this outlet, their emotions will no longer be a hurdle to the educational process.
