My students are the most important people in my classrooms. From day one, I want to learn as much as I can about every one of my students so that I, their English Language Arts teacher, can try to fashion a narrative of highly engaging books that both allow my students to see themselves in the main characters, and also help instruct them on how to become the best people possible; highly engaged and informed citizens. I believe that when young people identify with, and are interested in compelling characters and stories, they are far more likely to improve their reading skills and actually WANT to read. Given the fantastically diverse and high poverty population I serve, I try to find books that speak to them about their lives and offer options. I work tirelessly to tackle hate, which I see daily in our hallways and, of course, we see daily in the news. So far this year, we have learned about identity, refugees and the Holocaust. I have brought in refugees to speak to my students, many of whom share their own refugee stories, a Holocaust survivor, and we are visiting the Holocaust Center for Humanity in June as well as one of Anne Frank's chestnut trees of remembrance. What I hope to incorporate, this year and beyond, is Angie Thomas's fantastic book, The Hate You Give, to truly show how hate can only gain power when hate is returned. Instead, we should choose love, and never be indifferent in the face of hatred.
