My students need new fine motor tasks to help increase their engagement and independence in the classroom. Our class needs durable materials that can be reused each year for all students. Students with autism require differentiation and unique ideas to help reach their full potential. My students thrive in an environment in which is not over-stimulating, calm, and is compatible with reducing anxiety. Tools such as LED lighting help to create a calm classroom environment. Students with disabilities often find bright lights to be very over stimulating and they can trigger tantrums. Our classroom completes daily tasks with the use of visual timers. Visual timers help reduce anxiety when completing classwork and transitioning. My students also need flexible seating options. Each child is unique and have their own preference in seating. Often times, this means that the traditional chairs are not effective in our classroom. My students need flexible seating that allows them to feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment.
