Many of my students view reading as boring because of the books they have had to read in school. Who can blame them? Our English curriculum is severely outdated with titles written 100 years or more ago. Students have a hard time understanding what they're reading because of writing style, but even if they do understand it they don't relate to it. I want to give my students access to books that they will be excited about and can relate to. My hope is that by doing this I will be able to get them excited about reading. Throughout the school year, students will have to pick a personal novel from their library to read and then write an essay about. Students will be required to read at least four per year. This way, even if they don't enjoy reading (which is crazy!) they will have at least read SOMETHING that year.
