For the first time in our art class, we will be shifting gears and instead of learning about different artists in history, we will learn about art around the world and the impact that art has had through the years in various cultures. This lesson is based on African mask making and the expressive symbolism used on the masks. Students will be able to create their own symbols and expressions to represent themselves and what they want others to see in them. Art education creates a positive climate in schools and helps students develop creative problem-solving skills. They realize that they are unique and their artwork is one of a kind, even when they are all doing the same project with the same directions. I believe by adding the cultural aspect to art education, our students will connect with their artwork even more than they ever have. Students are fascinated by the many different styles and mediums of art and love to emulate them, and I believe that teaching them about the different cultures and the impact art has had on them will help students relate to art at a more personal level.
