These simple, swivel, cushioned chairs are my big move for the school year to come. The idea behind obtaining these chairs for my 7th graders is to keep them comfortable in what can sometimes be a very uncomfortable setting. Most of my students struggle with math concepts and when they're sitting in plastic chairs, attached to their wood desktop, it's difficult for them to focus on much else other than how much their bottoms are throbbing. Think about your office chair; is it cushioned, leather, provide back support, have armrests, have a comfortable cloth that does not stick to your legs, have wheels for mobility, or anything more appealing than an ugly, green, plastic chair that does not move? I have explored the idea of flexible seating for my students but my major concern is losing their attention because someone is being sucked into a beanbag. I love the concept but for math, I really need to be able to keep them engaged while keeping them focused on the material at hand; hence the simple cushioned, swivel chairs and not folding bungee chairs or a mixture of lounge chairs. The swivel provides the option to remain seated but move, the cushion provides comfort to prevent throbbing bottoms, and the variety of colors offers an easy way to group the students for group activities: green with green, red with red, one of each color, etc. Overall, I believe these will be a wonderful contribution to my classroom for both my students and myself for the year to come.
