Mathematical modeling is at the core of so much of high school mathematics, but modeling projects are frequently difficult to implement due to restrictions in funding. This project give 250 high school juniors the opportunity to imagine themselves as engineers, mathematicians, and scientists by introducing students to engineering principals, engaging them in hands-on tasks, and using real life applications to motivate the need for mathematics. The items I have chosen will allow students to work in groups to construct Ferris wheels. We will use these Ferris wheels to understand the graphs of trigonometry functions as well as create mathematical representations of the Ferris wheels. Moreover, the materials in this project will enable students to customize their models to different sizes, which will in turn allow students to notice how differences in their physical models are reflected in their mathematical equations.
