Options help to increase overall happiness, which lends time for engagement. In today’s world, engagement is key. Alternative seating choices can help create unique learning experiences while increasing engagement and an all around love for learning. With the requested ball chairs, bean bags, saucer chairs and folding chairs, my students will be offered the option of where they want to sit each day instead of being required to sit at their assigned desk. They must choose a seat that not only promotes comfort, but also their learning. Providing options, such as flexible seating, increases student excitement and enthusiasm to learn! Flexible seating provides choice, which gives ownership within the classroom. Flexible seating provides choice, which gives ownership within the classroom because students get to choose where they work and with whom. It allows for movement such as bouncing, leaning, twisting, kicking, fidgeting, wobbling, rolling, standing, kneeling, and sitting to suit each student’s needs. Flexible seating helps build a classroom community by encouraging kids to share space and supplies, but it also encourages them to take turns in different locations and options. It provides comfort, which helps students stay calm, focused, and productive. When students are uncomfortable, they are distracted and unproductive. Flexible seating promotes collaboration by allowing students to easily pair up, work in small groups, or discuss as a whole class. Finally, flexible seating simulates sense of touch. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADHD, ADD and ASD.
