I am expanding my teaching strategies by introducing a classroom library for student free read. It is a level 1 Spanish class where the student population has various levels of knowledge of the Spanish language. Reading this novel with my students will expose them to grammar, new vocabulary and hispanic culture, and, more importantly, to encourage interest in learning a second language, or stretching existing knowledge. The larger variety of titles and levels of novels that I can have in my classroom, the more interested and willing the students will be to grab a book and take the time to read. Reading novels will open the door for students to recognize vocabulary, make grammatical connections, learn about the world around them and fuel their interest as they realize they actually CAN learn another language.
