Who doesn't love recess? We love recess at our school but our students and staff enjoy it more when we have equipment for the students to use! Many of our students love sports but they can't afford to participate in the programs at the park district due financial difficulties. The best part of some of these students' day is recess! Recess is where they get to be with all the students in their grade level. This is really important for the special needs students that I primarily work with since they spend the majority of their day isolated from the mainstream classrooms of their peers and are in self-contained rooms to meet their many needs. Recess for many students is their only time to run around and play with sports equipment. They do have gym but only for 10 weeks of the school year. Many children spend their hours at home playing Fortenite! When we first go outside it is with excitement and energy but then as the supplies dwindle the darkness comes. When the ball goes over the fence and becomes trapped in the fenced in pool area (aka island of lost toys) we all get a little deflated. Our ratio of 3 balls to 35 students goes down to 2 and it gets ugly. When we have equipment for everyone there are less fights and more fun. Cones, bouncy balls, flags for football take a group of kids from running wild in every direction to playing on teams and interacting in small groups. One student, who has many physical impairments, enjoys one on one time with a friend so she isn't so self-conscious. Equipment helps everyone be included in their own way!
