My students can be hard to motivate to read but they are interested in current social justice issues that they mostly learn about through social media. Adding the novel All American Boys to our Social Justice and Equality Unit will allow our class to explore the current American social climate and allow open discussion of systemic racism. As part of this unit, we read several non-fiction accounts of The Civil Rights Movement and current social issues in this country. A relevant and current account based on real-world events will strengthen the unit and allow students to see their own role as responsible citizens. This project has a two-fold purpose: increasing student motivation to read and addressing current social issues.
