My fourth grade group can be a squirmy bunch because they are an active bunch. When students are seated at their desks for our daily half hour independent reading time, they tend to get stiff and uncomfortable. The plastic stacking chairs at students' desks don't allow for movement. The small, tattered and stained rug that is currently near our bookshelves is not inviting to students who like to sit on a softer surface while they read. Having flexible chairs and a bright, alluring, rug will allow students to not only feel comfortable while reading, but keep them engaged. Comfort, especially for my SPED students who need movement opportunities throughout the day, is a game changer. My students will be able to dive into a story instead of being distracted by any bodily discomfort. The Flex Floor Seats will be an incentive for all students to stay on task; whoever has been focused throughout our mini lesson will likely be rewarded by sitting in a flex chair or the flex rug for independent reading time. This is a different kind of environment to read in than what is provided at home and will give students something to look forward to during our reading block. I have four ELL students who receive push in support and highly benefit from extra resources (graphic organizers, extra examples, sentence starter strips etc) that I provide for daily mini lessons. Instead of these resources being cluttered on my desk, as they pile up from day to day, the magnetic folder bins would be a perfect way for students to easily access these supports. The magnetic storage boxes would be beneficial for all students; they can hold highlighters, Post it-notes, red pens, and extra pencils for students to take notes and annotate as they read.
