Most of my lab safety equipment is extremely old and used. Safety is a top concern, and the safety equipment is the first step to all scientific inquiry labs. Without proper safety, students can not experience as many hands-on, labs. With this equipment, I will ensure that all of my students are safely protected in the labs we have planned to do with them this year. This year we plan to complete several labs including: manipulating environmental conditions (temperature, pH level) to observe impact on enzyme activity; the effects of antibiotics on bacterial populations; observe the outcome of photosynthesis and cellular respiration; and several others. Students will use this equipment for each of the lab to demonstrate the various learning objectives. One of the major labs we do over several days includes collecting samples (swabs) from around the community to observe possible bacterial contamination. From this one sample we can observe exponential growth of the bacterial population, and furthermore demonstrate the effectiveness of antibiotics using a controlled sample of E. coli bacteria. Using this equipment will protect the student's eyes and clothing during each lab such as the one described.
