Choice is most powerful when used with a purpose. The power of choice can shift the control of learning to the correct individual, the student. By allowing students to have choice, students have a say in what and how they learn. This project is just that; allowing students choice with the purpose of creating and implementing Project-based Learning experiences. Students need to have ownership of their learning and be a part of the action plan that teachers naturally create and establish for them. Within my classroom, what I observe each day is by offering students choice in their learning, students show an increase in engagement, ownership, and motivation. Students become reflective learners who think about their personal learning goal and what activities best help them to practice that goal. Students learn how to problem solve and show grit when extending their learning. Students are able to independently seek additional instruction or modeling from myself or peers, in order to gain the knowledge and skills needed to complete their learning activity. Students work collaboratively and are able to showcase their learning in a variety of ways. Therefore, these storage shelves and educational materials will provide my students with a space designated to their own personal learning needs, while encouraging students to have more responsibility and ownership of their learning leading to increased achievement.
