A group of students is turning an old, unwanted school bus into a tiny house on wheels. Their goal is to transform a typical 22-window school bus into a completely livable space otherwise known as a “Skoolie.” The finished product will include a living/dining area, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom with shower and composting toilet. Along with the size restriction of a bus, a major design challenge is to create spaces that are multi-functional with furniture that can transform to meet the needs of the occupants. Additionally, we intend to design and install a full solar power system, plumb fresh and gray water tanks and utilize a composting toilet to avoid the nuisance of black water. As you can tell, this project is no small task and will be difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish without the help of our community partners. We are asking for support in the way of funding and/or materials over the course of the next year. Though the short-term goal is to encourage real-world problem solving and innovation in our students, the true heart behind all of their hard work has always been to create something that is a benefit to their community. The students working on this project are gaining a better understanding of electrical, plumbing, flooring, and HVAC systems, insulation, paint, interior design and sustainable design practices as well as developing problem solving skills, gaining experience with proper tool usage, job site safety, professional communication, networking, social This project is an entirely voluntary endeavor with students spending their summer vacation to complete the work and is not tied to any particular class or CTE pathway. Work will continue through the 2019-2020 school year during evenings and weekends with the aim of completing the build by the end of Summer 2020.
